My Experience with Intermittent Fasting

I’ve never been a diet person since I’ve always felt that it means that you restrict yourself until you reach your goal and then you stop. Usually what happens is you gain it all back and sometimes more. I’m more of a make lifestyle changes and stick with them for life. That’s a lot of commitment for some, but I’m cool with it.

The reason I started to do intermittent fasting was my jiu jitsu competition. Weight class rules are extremely strict and I had to weigh 141.5 lbs. About a month before the competition I fond myself kind of stuck at 144 lbs and needed some changes as it is. Joe recommended I try intermittent fasting and once I started I fell in love.

TL;DR: You basically eat for 8 hours and fast for 16 hours. I’ve also read you can technically eat whatever you want (i.e. junk food) within your 8 hours but I chose to stay away from it.

Here’s what happened:

  • Within 1 week I lost 7 pounds
  • No more bloated mornings
  • More energy
  • Less headaches
  • Faster recovery

Now, the trick for me was finding my hours. I chose 10am to 6pm. Within these hours I felt comfortable because I could fit them within my work schedule and I’d stop eating before practice. Good thing for me is that after practice I rarely feel hungry.

The hardest parts for me were the weekends – when I’d stay in at night or go out it would always be outside of my hours so it was tempting to snack with friends or alone. Of course, I was strict because of competition so now that I’m out I plan to stay strict to this diet during the week and then be more lax during the weekends.

The great thing about this diet for me was how easy it was to follow and how fast my stomach got used to it. I was able to adjust very quickly and waking up sans the bloated belly is amazing. Especially when on my period! I’ve always been one to get really bloated and I’d feel horrible throughout – but with this I rarely see any bloated areas which keeps me feeling confident on those crappy days.

Have you ever heard of this diet and would you try it?
